About Ganshodo

Ganshodo was founded in 1901 by Shigetaro Hatano, and in 1904 expanded to Kanda, Tokyo to handle new and antiquarian books. Later, the company expanded into publishing, publishing legal and economic books. During the prewar and postwar periods, the company expanded its business by opening branches in Manchuria (now China) and Korea.

However, during the chaotic postwar period, the company’s business deteriorated and it faced a difficult time. In such circumstances, with the help of Sadajiro Kubo and many other supporters, Ganshodo was able to rebuild itself, and in 1955, it strengthened its business foundation while adapting to the changing times and converted from a new book seller to a antiquarian book store during the period of rapid economic growth.

Then, in 2025, Ganshodo embarked on a new challenge: expanding beyond antiquarian books to include an art business. To convey the appeal of diverse art, both old and new, within the proud tradition of Japanese painting, we handle Japanese art and culture, utilising an online platform to enter overseas markets. Our mission is to deliver Japanese culture and art to the world.

Ganshodo aims to promote Japanese culture and art worldwide through art that blends tradition and innovation. The works we handle encompass not only the fine traditional Japanese art of ukiyo-e and prints, but also extend broadly to manga and contemporary art, utilising printing techniques that evolve with the times. We are committed to the value of premium art, delivering high-quality works.

Through this approach, Ganshodo expresses Japan’s appeal in new forms, offering inspiration to customers worldwide. We actively expand into overseas markets, ensuring the value of Japanese art endures for future generations.
